About

This site showcases gardening with Pacific coast native plants and ornamentals in the Olympic rain shadow, including: Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, North Kitsap, Port Angeles, Sequim, Victoria, Anacortes, Whidbey Island, and the San Juan Islands.

Some of my favorite ornamental plants include: daphne, hardy gardenia, windmill palm, Mediterranean palm, sarcococca, camellia and Meyer lemon.

My favorite native trees are: Douglas-fir, Madrona, Coast Redwood, Sitka Spruce, Grand Fir, Western Hemlock, Western White Pine, Ponderosa Pine

Manzanitas, rhododendrons, azaleas and huckleberries are some of my favorite native shrubs.

Prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) is my favorite overall western native plant. Opuntia fragilis native range includes the Olympic rain shadow and is reportedly found near Sequim, and Fort Ebey on Whidbey Island. It was historically more common and probably widespread than it is today.
